“There is no such thing as bad publicity.” Really?

In February 2009 one of the most well known actresses in the world is beaten up by her boyfriend. Media all around the world are shocked and tell her story to the public. Public opinion stands behind her and supports her through this hard time in her life. Rihanna is supported by the most influential artists in the United States such as Jay Z and Kanye West.
Her boyfriend, Chris Brown, also a well known singer, turned himself in and admits to having abused his girlfriend on the night before the Grammy awards 2009.
Although at the beginning Rihanna was working with the investigators in order to build a domestic violence case, she quickly changed her mind and decided to not press charges against her ex-boyfriend.

Chris Brown pleaded guilty and had to go through counseling and do community service hours.

Rihanna was much appreciated in the US and the public opinion was very supportive but when she decided to drop the charges and in 2011 decided to give Chris Brown a second chance, public opinion turned against her. When Chris Brown asked for the restricting order to be lifted so he could approach Rihanna again, she backs him up. A decision most of her fans did not accept. At the same time she started going out more and more, getting drunk and showing parts of her body in the streets. She goes from being a respectable artist to someone trying to get attention and promoting her body more than her music.
Rihanna explained that she just loves Chris Brown and she decided to give him a second chance. If it backfired, it would be because of her own mistake and that she could handle the fact that the public was completely disapproving.
Although Rihanna acts as if she doesn’t care about the public’s opinion she still defends herself by saying that her relationship with Chris Brown is now completely different and that it is not likely that he will abuse her again.

In order to reverse the negative publicity I think a public relations campaign should focus on how Chris Brown has gotten better at his anger management and how his year of counseling helped him be a better man. Also the love between the two actors should be clearly shown in order for the public to understand why Rihanna is still in love with Chris.
To begin with Chris Brown would have to give a press conference about what happened in 2009 and give a public apology to Rihanna and her fans.chris-brown-and-rihanna1
Then Chris and Rihanna should go out together as a couple and do regular activities like going for a walk in a park, going to the zoo or an amusement park. Anything to show the public how loving Chris Brown has becomed.
Finally Rihanna should get involved with a charity that helps abused women. The public would see that if she can get involved like this, it means she is on her way to healing and being with Chris does not make her worse.
Also she would have to calm down on her drinking sessions and stop showing her body off but instead make a new music on how her life has changed after 2009, in a good way.

I think the hardest part of this campaign would be that Chris Brown is unpredictable and it is impossible to say what will get him mad, and how violent he will become when it happens. If he decides to be violent again, there is no way the public will believe his good will about making his relationship with Rihanna work.

Also Rihanna likes being the center of attention and it would be very hard to convince her to stop acting like she currently does.
